As an entire nation mourns three days for the Mahdia tragedy, H.E. President Dr. Irfaan Ali led a candlelight vigil in Georgetown to mourn the loss of lives. Similar exercises were conducted in other parts of the country and Region 3 was no different. D1 Division Community Policing was not to be left out and they organized a similar event in the President’s village, Leonora. Hundreds turned out to join Region 3 Police, the members from various CPG’s, officers from the RDC, NDC’s and CDC’s, and other invited guests. A number of speakers, including the RDC Vice Chairman, Mr. Omesh Satyadeo, Chris Ganesh, Chairman for the D1 Division, Community Activist Jai Lall, and others, addressed the large crowd and expressed their sympathies and condolences to the members of the bereaved families and those who also survived. Well-known national Indian singer, Gautam Persaud rendered a soul-searching Mohamed Rafi song in a tribute. Present was Ms. Edwards, a relative of the Edwards victim. She expressed her thanks for all of the President’s initiatives for providing help and assistance at this moment of need and for all his comforting reassurances. She also thanked the organizers for arranging the vigil. It was a touching moment as many openly shed tears as they lit their candles.
Yours respectfully,
Jai Lall.
