From MP Ravi Ratiram

In times of economic uncertainty, it is imperative for the government to identify sectors that can provide a stable foundation for growth and recovery. As economists in Trinidad and Tobago and other developing economies have discovered over the past few decades over-reliance on a single industry can expose an economy to significant risks that can be mitigated through diversification.

Through investment in agriculture, economies can diversify their revenue streams and reduce dependence on volatile sectors as robust agricultural sector serves as a buffer against economic recessions, global market fluctuations, and abrupt policy changes. Moreover, agriculture-based industries, such as agro-tourism, organic farming, and agricultural technology, present opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and export diversification, further contributing to economic growth.
\
Proper investment in agriculture has the potential to generate employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas where job scarcity is common. Through this investment, a responsible government would be able to stimulate the creation of jobs across the entire value chain, from farming and processing to distribution and marketing. These jobs not only support farmers and their families but also contribute to the growth of related industries such as agribusiness, logistics, and retail. The stability of the agricultural sector can provide a reliable income source, reducing poverty rates and supporting economic resilience.

Agriculture encompasses a wide range of activities, including crop cultivation, livestock rearing, food processing, and distribution. Agriculture plays a central role in providing sustenance for a nation’s population. By focusing on agricultural development, countries can enhance food production, reduce dependency on imports, and secure a stable supply chain. This not only strengthens national resilience but also reduces vulnerability to global crises. Supporting the agricultural sector will enable nations to have better control over their food supply, ensuring people have access to affordable and nutritious food, irrespective of external factors.
