Vivek Ramaswamy, a contender for the Republican nominee in the upcoming 2024 election in the US, is not only a successful businessman and academic but one who has a clear vision for the future of the United States of America. He is not indulging in attacks on personalities that is the norm in Caribbean politics but confronting ideologies such as Wokeism and Critical Race Theory which he finds inimical to the future of the USA. Another aspect of his campaign is that he does not condemn his fellow republicans including Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump. This is a lesson our UNC people who are opposed to the leadership of Kamla Persad Bissessar can learn from. Such behaviors only confirm that class is class and lagoon is lagoon!
Vivek Ramaswamy is a political neophyte, that is, he is new to politics, but he has made it clear to his audience what he would do should he be elected to the White House. For example, on foreign policy he said that he would use the troops to guard the borders to prevent the infiltration of illegal migrants, drugs, and ammunitions instead of sending them to fight other peoples’ wars. Ramaswamy is making it clear that he is against ideologies that choose to debase meritocracy such as affirmative action and that he would use his executive powers as President to terminate such social programs.
Apart from being youthful, Vivek Ramaswamy is a successful entrepreneur. He is not in politics to earn an income. This is a lesson that our local politicians can learn from. I have always supported the politics of Fuad Khan and Ramesh Maharaj because they are two successful professionals who lose money when they hold political office. It is time that we encourage self-made individuals to enter politics rather than having a band of unemployed, underemployed, and failed professionals.
It is time that the ‘deep state’ that Donald Trump and Vivek Ramaswamy are talking about be acknowledged in our country. It is this deep state that undermines the implementation of policies of non-PNM governments when elected to office. These individuals are there to protect their entrenched interests at the cost of national interests. They are fully aware that they owe their appointments to the PNM and hence their tooth and nail response against all opposition to the PNM.
I agree that Kamla must go but where is the Ramaswamy to replace her? As members of the UNC, we have a sacred duty to ensure that the UNC does not become a ten-day gang to put food on the table for our families. UNC must attract a stable middle -class leadership that understands the values of hard work and sacrifice. If these values are not upheld and protected, the party would continue to fail at the polls.
