The City of Lauderhill in Florida has officially proclaimed March 8, 2026 as “The Honorable Kamla Persad-Bissessar Day” in recognition of the leadership and contributions of Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
The proclamation was issued by Denise D. Grant, Mayor of Lauderhill, alongside Vice Mayor Richard Campbell and Commissioners Sarai Martin, Melissa P. Dunn, and John T. Hodgson.
According to the proclamation, the honour recognizes Persad-Bissessar’s distinguished leadership and longstanding public service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as her influence within the wider Caribbean community and diaspora.
City officials noted that the Trinidadian and Tobagonian community has established a vibrant and growing presence within Lauderhill and across South Florida, contributing significantly to the region’s cultural, social and economic life through entrepreneurship, public service and civic leadership.
The proclamation further praised Persad-Bissessar for what it described as her historic leadership and commitment to democracy, education, national development and opportunity. It also highlighted her role as an inspiration to women and girls across the Caribbean and internationally.
City leaders said the Prime Minister’s visit to Lauderhill as part of her engagement with the Caribbean diaspora strengthens the bonds of friendship, shared heritage and mutual respect between communities in South Florida and Trinidad and Tobago.
The recognition was also issued in the context of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, both celebrated in March to honour the achievements and contributions of women around the world.
In the proclamation, Mayor Grant commended Persad-Bissessar for her exemplary leadership, historic achievements and enduring contributions to the advancement of women and the strengthening of Caribbean communities both at home and throughout the diaspora.
The official declaration designates March 8, 2026 as “The Honorable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, S.C., M.P., Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Day” in the City of Lauderhill.
